Leon S. White, PhD
Tuesday, May 15 -7 :00 pm
“Experiencing Golf Poetry"
Read golf poetry out loud, It will lower your score; And if one poem doesn’t do it, Read two or three more!

A Little Golf History.” The first reference to golf is found in an Act of the Scottish Parliament in 1457 that bans the game! But the origins of the game are unknown. However, this didn’t stop an anonymous 19th century poet from giving us a charming version of the story in verse.
The earliest poem to include a reference to golf was published in Edinburgh in 1638. An Edinburgh medical student penned the first instructional golf poem in his diary in 1687. Furthermore, the first separately printed golf book was a 358-line mock-heroic poem first published in 1743.

For the last six years Leon White has been collecting poetry about golf, written by golfers¬ - a little known area of the golf literature. As his collection of poems increased, it became evident that reading these verses constituted a new way to experience all the attributes of the game. “I wanted to share what I had discovered with golf enthusiasts worldwide, so first I began developing a book and then I started writing a Blog. The book, Golf Course of Rhymes – Links between Golf and Poetry Through the Ages, with a Foreword by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., was published in 2011 and is available on Amazon.com. The Blog continues.”
Talk will be followed by a cocktail

Venue: AMERICAN GOLF STORE – 35 bis rue de l’abbé Grégoire -75006 Paris –www.americangolfparis.com- 7.00 PM to 9.00 PM. (Discount to American Club members on golf items in the shop)
Wednesday, March 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
TALK FOLLOWED BY A COCKTAIL DINATOIRE
Understanding Pakistan is going to be key to the 21st century. Denise Dailey has written a
powerful book on her travels there and her insights on the culture and in particular the role
and position of women. Northern Pakistan and its extraordinary people are brought
to brilliant life in this insightful and compelling book. One reviewer described the
book stating: “Denise Dailey has given us an unforgettable view of Northern
Pakistan, a fascinating part of the world that, for geopolitical reasons, is
becoming increasingly remote to Western tourists. In the lyrical, timeless prose
of the best travel writers, she conveys the sounds, shapes, smells and textures
of this world, its beauty, its poverty, its friendliness, its hostility. It took an
adventurous spirit for Ms. Dailey and her companions to make this journey, one
that many would not attempt under the best of circumstances. Thanks to Ms.
Dailey's rich background in art, history, travel, nature, language and cuisine,
among her other wisdoms, and to her amazing attention to detail, we feel as if
we've made the trip ourselves.
Denise is half Brazilian, half French and has lived for many years in New York with her
husband and children. She now divides her time between New York city and the Catskills.
Venue: France-Amériques –– 9, avenue Franklin Roosevelt 75008 Paris
Time: 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Last minute payments will not be accepted
Wednesday, March 7 from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Alan S. Kahan is an historian, political theorist, translator, travel writer, editor, and resident of Paris. He teaches at SciencesPo and at the American Graduate School of International Relations and Diplomacy. For the past 150 years, Western intellectuals have trumpeted contempt for capitalism and capitalists. Mind vs. Money is an analytical history of how and why so many intellectuals have opposed capitalism. It is also an argument for how this opposition can be tempered. Kahan argues that intellectuals are a permanently alienated elite in capitalist societies.
Dear Friends and Fellow American Club Members,

Much is written about the importance of this great holiday, so I will be brief.

Benjamin Franklin, the forefather of our Club, thought that the turkey should be the national emblem and not the eagle for reasons to long to repeat here. But whether you will be celebrating with friends and family at home today or with the American Club of Paris on Friday evening, the turkey, dressing and all that goes with it reminds us all of how much we have to be thankful for.

Aside from all the obvious things, I am grateful for the efforts that our volunteers and Committee Members put in to keeping our Club vibrant.

On behalf of the Club's Executive Committee, I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.

Joe Smallhoover
President
