cordially invites you to a Zoom conference with
Anthony L. Gardner
Former United States Ambassador to the European Union
Please join us for a unique opportunity to hear Ambassador Gardner as he speaks candidly with our Executive Committee Member Alexander Leventhal, a fellow St. Bernard Old Boy, about his tenure as Ambassador under President Obama. Their discussion will include reflections on the current state of US - EU relations after four years of the Trump Administration, and offer thoughts about what the next four years of a Biden Administration may bring for the relationship between the United States and the European Union (post-Brexit).
Ambassador Gardner has devoted more than 27 years of his distinguished career to US - European affairs as a government official and lawyer. Appointed by President Obama in 2013, Mr. Gardner served as the United States Ambassador to the European Union from March 2014 to January 2017. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in some of the most challenging issues in the US - EU relationship, including the negotiations to conclude a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Agreement (TTIP), the Privacy Shield Agreement as well as the Umbrella Agreement, facilitating the transatlantic transfer of data. He was also instrumental in US - EU coordination of sanctions against Russia following its annexation of Crimea and the facilitation of US participation in EU-funded research programs.
Today, Ambassador Gardner is Managing Partner at Brookfield Asset Management, a board member of Iberdrola S.A., and senior counsel in the law firm Sidley Austin LLP, where he works in the International Trade and Privacy and Cybersecurity areas. He is also a member of the advisory boards of the Centre for European Reform, the German Marshall Fund and the European Policy Centre.
In 2020, he authored the book Stars with Stripes: The Essential Partnership between the European Union and the United States (Palgrave McMillan).
Don't miss the chance to be a part of this thought-provoking discussion about the special relationship between the United States and the European Union.
