La Panthéonisation de Joséphine Baker

*Q&A session in English

featuring special guest Brian Baker, son of Joséphine Baker

At the head of the acclaimed Osez Joséphine petition signed by over 38,000 people on Change.org and addressed to the Président de la République Emmanuel Macron himself, author and essayist Laurent Kupferman has spearheaded the remarkable: on November 30th, 2021 Joséphine Baker will become the first African-American and first performing artist to be laid to rest in the sacred walls of the Panthéon.

She was an artist, the first Black international star, a muse of the cubists, awarded the French Army resistance medal following WWII, active alongside Martin Luther King in the civil rights fight, Kupferman states in the petition, filed following a seven year crusade by the acclaimed artist's family.

For Laurent Kupferman, at a time of great debate regarding France's attitude towards individuals who have been discriminated against, Baker's pantheonization will be a powerful symbol of national unity, emancipation and cultural relativism à la française.

With a triple degree in Law, Theater and Singing, Laurent Kupferman began his career in cultural administration, as advisor in the offices of the French Ministry of Culture and consultant for the UNESCO, amongst others. He is also one of the founders of the European Symphony Orchestra and has been the Director of Communication for the French Sesame Autism association since 2016.

As an author and essayist, Kupfermann has written numerous books and articles such as Rassembler - La Franc-Maçonnerie (2021), Trois Minutes pour comprendre la République Française (2017) and Les Aventuriers de la République (2015). He is a regular guest on French radio and television channels. Mr. Kupferman has written the documentary Joséphine Baker, un destin français which will air on November 30th.

In 2021 Laurent Kupferman was awarded the distinguished Ordre des Arts et des Lettres as Officier.

Register now for a chance to hear Josephine Baker's remarkable story ahead of her November 30th pantheonization presided over by President Emmanuel Macron.
