invites you to a special evening with
Yegan Mazandarani
Photographer and Author of Parias, Notes from the DPR
Long before the Ukraine became the target of Russia's large-scale warfare, ravaged by the conflict and devastation of recent days, the country's south-eastern Donbass region has been at the epicenter of an armed conflict between the separatist movement and the Ukrainian government for close to a decade.
French-Iranian photographer Yegan Mazandarani travelled to the Donbass region in September of 2018, a trip that would forever leave a mark on him and his work. Please join us Tuesday March 22nd at Columbia University's Reid Hall for a special evening as Yegan movingly speaks to us about his initial impulse for exploring this war-stricken area and his interest in the people, their history, their alienation. Listen as he shares what he witnessed, what he captured and how it ultimately changed his view on the importance of photography and photojournalism in providing honest eyewitness accounts while bringing new points of view to light.
Don't miss this opportunity for an up-close and personal account of a photographer about whom it is said that through his singular approach, pace and style, Yegan wasn’t seeking a complex analysis of the situation; instead, he wanted to record people’s experiences and impressions from this territory in turmoil, to find tenderness in the debris.
I would like to thank all the people I had a chance to photograph
in the Donbass for placing their trust in me. I hope I was worthy of it.
- Yegan Mazandarani -
Born in Paris in 1991, Yegan Mazandarani first experimented with photography in 2010 when he spent a year travelling through Central Asia by bus and on horseback. From the very beginning, he chose black and white film and soon opted for a medium-format camera to allow for more room to experiment with depth of field. Following a stint in Istanbul with numerous trips to the Iranian regions, Yegan returned to Paris where he was accepted as a resident of the artist’s studio Le Lavoir.
Following his experience in the Donbas, Yegan published his first book PARIAS which in 2020 was awarded by the HiP - Histoires Photographiques. In light of the current crisis, the book's first edition is currently available for free download on yegan-mazandarani.com.
Today Yegan spends his time between Paris, Berlin and Tehran.
Register now for this special event that includes a brief historical and geographical analysis and factual recounting of the key events (1991, 2004, 2007 and 2014) that ultimately set the stage for the current situation.
