Hôtel de la Marine

Facade of the Hôtel de la Marine facing the Place de la Concorde,

viewed from the Tuileries Garden

As one of the most iconic monuments in the heart of Paris, the Hôtel de la Marine, located on the Place de la Concorde, impresses with its fine architectural ensemble, designed and built between 1757 and 1774 by Ange-Jacques Gabriel, King Louis XV’s chief architect. At first housing the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne, the office managing the furnishings of all royal properties, following the French Revolution it would later become the headquarters of France's Ministère de la Marine until 2015.

Join us as Christine Baltay, Ph.D. (Institute of Fine Arts, NYU), now Professor Emerita, once again guides us through this unique monument which from 2015 to 2021 was fully restored by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux. Our visit will focus on aspects of the exceptional insights into late 18th Century French aristocratic life that the apartments of the Hôtel de la Marine now offer. The refurnished and refurbished quarters of a high government official in the last years of the ancien regime are unique in their assemblage of artifacts, furniture and decor that recreate a veritable ambiance of this lost way of life.

Register now for this exclusive members-only private guided tour that sold out in less than one hour last September. Let yourself be carried away by our guide extraodinaire Christine Baltay, Ph.D., who for many years taught Art History at The American University of Paris as well as the History of Decorative Arts in the graduate program at Parsons Paris. Dr. Baltay's primary focus centers on 17th and 18th Western European Century art, architecture and decorative arts.
