Art, Soul and Destiny -

An Artist's Journey from America to Provence

Let yourself be carried away to the beautiful region of the Provence and into the world of artist Jill Steenhuis as she opens up to us about her creative process, engaging a spiritual dimension in which nature becomes a dancing partner, "waltzing together to bring into being a new creation – one with sound and movement and wild brush strokes, expressing a new poetry on the canvas".

Inspired by great masters such as the artists Cézanne and Van Gogh, poets Emily Dickinson and Rainer Maria Rilke, as well as the philosophy of Zen Buddhism and the Bible, Jill draws and paints en plein air, surrounded by the ever-luminous landscape of the Aix-en-Provence countryside with its abundance of color, scents and contrasts.

Olive Trees & Sun at L’Abeille, 2019, Oil on Canvas, 30″x40″

Jill Steenhuis, an American from Atlanta, Georgia, received her BFA in studio art from Sweet Briar College in Virginia in 1980. Following graduation, she journeyed to the south of France to discover Cézanne's Mont Sainte Victoire and entered The Marchutz School of Fine Arts in Aix-en-Provence. She became a full-time painter and spent 14 years working out of Cézanne's studio at the Château Noir.

Jill has exhibited in solo shows in New York City, Greenwich, Atlanta, Chicago, Washington DC, Dallas, San Francisco among other major American cities, as well as Melbourne, Australia, Aix-en-Provence and Paris. Her work is part of the permanent collections of several museums and important private collections in America, Australia and France. Jill appeared on “Good Morning America” and served as the Cézanne specialist for the Smithsonian Institute for the 100th anniversary of the painter’s death.

Jill's book Art, Soul & Destiny, with an introduction by Michael Shapiro, the former Director and Curator of the High Museum in Atlanta, GA is a retrospective of 30 years of painting and includes her poetry, prose and letters about the creative process and her spiritual journey.
