Former French Ambassador to the United States
Diplomat
Author
Join us for our season's opening luncheon as former French Ambassador to the United States Gérard Araud opens up to us about his 40+ year tenure as a diplomat and reaching the highest rank in the French diplomatic service, Ambassadeur de France.
His Excellency Gérard Araud will talk about his long-standing admiration for Henry Kissinger and what ultimately moved him to author a book on this remarkable individual, undeniably one of the greatest actors in foreign policy - loved or not.
Having personally met Kissinger on several occasions, in his book titled Henry Kissinger - Le diplomat du siècle Ambassador Araud gives a candid portrayal of a multifaceted personage who has played a pivotal role in many of the 20th century's most important events: the end of the Vietnam War, opening to China in 1972, détente with the USSR and the Yom Kippur War, to name a few. And even today, after over 40 years of having been out of power, the world's leaders still consult him, whether Putin or Xi Jinping, Modi or Macron.
Register now for the chance to listen to His Excellency talk about his extensive life experience as a diplomat, Henry Kissinger and his expert views on the current state of world affairs.
Prior to his tenure as French Ambassador to the United States (2014-2019), Gérard Araud held numerous positions within the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, notably Director for Strategic Affairs, Security and Disarmament (2000-2003), Ambassador of France to Israel (2003-2006), Director General for Political Affairs and Security (2006-2009), and Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations in New York (2009-2014).
Over the course of his career, Mr. Araud has developed specialized knowledge in two key areas: Middle East and strategic & security issues. While active at the UN Security Council in New York he contributed to the adoption of resolutions on Libya (1970 and 1973), Côte d’Ivoire (1975), the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali and the Central African Republic, and participated in debates on the Syrian and Ukrainian crises. From 2006 to 2009 he was the French negotiator on the Iranian nuclear issue.
In addition to having written numerous articles in French reviews, Ambassador Araud has published his memoirs Passeport diplomatique (2019, Grasset), a biography of Henry Kissinger Henry Kissinger - Le diplomate du siècle (2021, Tallandier) and is set to publish a book on French diplomatic history in September 2022 titled Histoires diplomatiques (Grasset).
Today Ambassador Araud acts as an advisor, is a trustee of the International Crisis Group and a Senior Distinguished Fellow of the Atlantic Council in Washington DC. He is a columnist for the French weekly Le Point and the French TV channel BFM TV. And as a foreign affairs expert he is often interviewed by renowned global media outlets including CNN and the BBC.
Ambassador Araud has been honoured Chevalier in 2005 and Officier de la Légion d'honneur in 2013.
