is pleased to invite you to a luncheon with special guest
Pierre Servan-Schreiber
Lawyer, Mediator, Advisor, Consultant
and Member of the Paris & New York Bar Associations
He will speak to the club (in English) on:
Hope for the Hopi
An Ancient Native American Tribe
In 2013, as part of Alliance des Avocats pour les Droits de l'Homme, a group of lawyers connecting NGOs in need with law firms offering free legal assistance, Pierre Servan-Schreiber received a pressing request from one of the most world's most prominent indigenous-rights groups. Survival International tasked Mr. Servan-Schreiber with helping to prevent the sale of 70 so-called Katsinam, sacred masks of the Native American Indian Hopi tribe, destined to be sold by Neret-Minet Tessier & Sarrou at the Paris-based auction house, Drouot.
Listen in as Mr. Servan-Schreiber tells the saga of how he took on this important case, working closely with the Hopi to attempt to halt the sale. However, following the filing of a lawsuit with the judge ultimately ruling in favor of Drouot under the premise that under French law, the only items that cannot be sold or auctioned off are parts of the human body, Servan-Schreiber managed to retrieve two of the sacred objects that were ultimately returned to the Hopi tribe.
But this is far from the end of the story! Join us as Mr. Servan-Schreiber candidly speaks to us about the continuing attempts at sales of sacrilegious objects and his relentless efforts to prevent the pillage of sacred Hopi treasures.
