invites you to a private guided tour (in English) of
Christian Marclay
Visual Artist, Composer
For the first time since 2007, Christian Marclay’s work is being widely presented in an exhibition in Paris, designed according to this infamous multimedia artists' way of thinking, combining the preexisting with reinterpretation and metamorphosis.
Anchored in the world of sound since the 1970s, the work of the artist of dual Swiss and American nationality has extended over time to all facets of the visual arts: installations, photographs, prints, paintings, films and objects. Inspired by the likes of Andy Warhol and John Cage, but also by comic strips and punk aesthetics, his work is a collage, a montage, combining his love for music with his love for secondhand, everyday objects, molding the familiar things into the unfamiliar ones.
Register now and join us for this not-to-be missed private, guided tour dedicated to an extraordinary visionary artist!
Christian Marclay, « Disques vinyles avec annotations, utilisés lors de performances »,
1979–1986
Christian Marclay is a Swiss-American artist born in California in 1955. Following his studies at the École Supérieure d'Art Visuel in Geneva and the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, he was a visiting scholar at the Cooper Union in New York.
After his art studies in 1979, he founded a duo group with musician Kurt Henry, the two of them combining live sounds with images. Shortly thereafter, in the early 1980s, Christian Marclay embarked on a solo career, as a visual artist, though continuing to base his work on elements drawn from the world of sound.
The re in "to redo" and "to repeat" becomes the token of Marclay's work, the idea being that the word "record" signified "memory" and "souvenir". To Christian Marclay, memory is indeed our oldest system of record.
